The 7th grade students have been learning about ancient Greece for about a month now. During that time they studied several things about Greece such as its geography, its government, and now the Olympics. The study of the Olympics started off with a webquest (an online assignment that has students go to various web pages to find information) that went over the ancient Olympic games. The students were then put into different groups, each of which represents a different city-state in ancient Greece. The students made posters, armbands, outfits, and even had to come up with a chant all in the mannerisms of their city-state.
The Olympics started off with a heated boxing match. No, we didn’t actually break the gloves out. There were items in a box that the students had 30 seconds to look at and then write down as many as they could remember. The next event on the first day was art recognition (pictionary). Finally on day two the throwing events could begin. Students competed in various events such as the Frisbee discus throw, the nerf ball shot-put, and the paper javelin throw (see pictures). Day three included a heated battle of tongue twisters and the fan favorite ball in basket toss. Let me tell you coming into day three the Olympics were anyone’s to win. Final results for the Olympics are listed by class below. If there were any ties the medal went to the team with the most gold medals.
