7th Grade Social Studies Create Civilizations

"In a Shoe Box!"

by Keith Allen

September 09, 2008

7th Grade Social Studies students are currently learning about the components that make up a civilization.  After studying the early settlement of Catal Huyuk, students will create their own river valley "Civilization in a Shoe Box".  Working in groups of 2-3, students will use pop flats, cardboard, index cards, and other materials to create their own settlement based on what makes up a civilization.   They must show evidence of a stable food supply, social classes and housing, government, religion, culture, demonstrate technology, a system of writing, water and irrigation, and build all of this within a protection wall.

The projects need to be labeled with banners and flags, and include a two page explanation paper along with the project.  Students projects will be published on Mr. Allen's Website:  http://manila.lex.esu10.org/msallen/stories/storyReader$627
