Getting Involved in the Community

by Jason Sullivan

Every year during the labor day weekend hundreds of people flock to Lexington. This year was the 23rd annual Labor Day Antique and Craft Extravaganza. Hosting this type of event requires a lot of “labor” on a weekend where rest is the protocol. Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan asked for volunteers from their homerooms to assist in making this event a success.

Giving up three hours on a weekend to work hard for no money is not something that very many people would sign-up to do. A number of students signed up to participate in the cleanup of the event. Truth be told, only two people actually made an appearance. Anfernee Covarrubias-Linares and Taylor Bennett answered the call and labored for hours.

There will be lots of sore muscles and many nightmares of tables and chairs that need to be loaded up for these two. There will also be the memory of knowing that they helped give back to the community that has given so much to them. Anfernee expressed, “My hands really hurt…but it was fun.”

Community service is not always an easy thing, but without it our community would not be nearly as great as it is. Taylor has been giving her time to this event for a while. Taylor commented, “I’ve been doing this for five years.” (Taylor’s mother Susan is the organizer of the event.)

It was a hard day of work for these two, but it was a great show of how you can make a big difference in your community if you are willing to give it a try. Way to go SUPERSTARS!!!
