Mildred Was A Patriot!
She Died For Loyality To The Flag
May 14, 2007
Mildred Sorenson was a charter member of Lexington's first Girl Scout troop, organized in April of 1924. While the story of her death has been heard via the rumor mill for years, the real story of Mildred Sorenson is one of patriotism and dedication to her country's flag.
Mildred was on her way to a Girl Scout meeting on the evening of March 8, 1927, when she saw the United States flag still over a new addition built on to the Lexington High School (now LMS). Mildred decided that according to proper flag etiquette, the flag should be taken down and not remain up during the evening hours. She climbed the scaffolding, took the flag down, and after dropping the flag to other scouts below, began her descent. She lost her footing and fell some 40 feet to the ground.
Despite doctors' efforts, she died two hours later, without regaining consciousness. She was 15 years old.
Mildred's grave stone reads, "SHE DIED FOR LOYALITY TO THE FLAG" Today, Mildred Sorenson's memorial is still visible. She is remembered with a ribbon of stone, which is located on the northwest corner of the building.
